As a child, I always assumed the weeks leading up to Pesach had to be chaotic, stressful, and heavy. It was a dreaded time of year. I did not know that this was a choice rather than a must. It was not until I reached Seminary that I had an epiphany. Pesach does not have to be stressful! It does not have to be a black cloud of doom for weeks before the chag! I came to this conclusion after witnessing the calm and ease with which my chessed family prepped for Pesach. They were a young couple with small children, yet they managed to create an upbeat and happy environment as they prepared. I knew that my attitude around getting ready for Pesach had been changed forever. The knowledge I gained can be yours as well.
Tip #1 - Pesach is not spring cleaning
We tend to get carried away and take the opportunity to organize and de-clutter our entire house. While this is an admirable task, its not the time to add extra work to an already full load. Focus on the chametz that needs to be cleaned and vthe freshing up for after the holiday.
Tip #2 - Keep the environment cheerful and light
This cannot be emphasized enough. Children and spouses react to the tone that we set. Creating a positive and encouraging environment allows our children to feel excited for the upcoming chag. They will want to participate in this special project of preparing for Pesach.
Tip #3 - Throw out the Expectation of Perfectionism
When we rid our house of chametz, we are symbolically ridding ourselves of bad middot. It is not about getting every minute crumb, but about putting in our best effort to do the job right.
Tip #4 - plan ahead
Make lists of tasks that need to be done, shopping lists, and menu ideas. Thinking ahead takes away the last minute rush and stress.
Tip #5 - Take care of your own needs throughout the process
This may be the most important tip. Even though this is a busy time of year with extra tasks on top of the usual hussle and bussle. Self care is a MUST. You must put an ephasis on sleeping enough, eating properly, and taking time to do somethinf you enjoy. Burn out is a real issue.
