Shavous Nutrition: How to Eat Balanced This Yom Tov

Shavous is a time to eat, enjoy and celebrate receiving the Torah. This can be uplifting but it can also be a challenge to eat in a balanced way during yom tov. With so many delicious foods to choose from, it can be easy to overindulge. However, there are a few things you can do to be more mindful while eating on Shavous.

1. Choose lean protein sources

Lean protein is an important part of any healthy diet, and it's especially important on Shavous when you're likely to be eating more calories than usual.Ensure you are getting lean protein such as fish or chicken at least one meal a day. These proteins are low in saturated fat and calories, and they're also a good source of protein, which will help you feel full.

2. Load up on fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and fiber, and they're a great way to add volume to your meals without adding a lot of calories. Consider making half your plate fruits and vegetables at your Shavous meals.

3. Watch your portion sizes

It's easy to overeat on Shavous, but it's important to watch your portion sizes. Start with a small portion of each dish, and then go back for seconds if you're still hungry. Eating on a smaller plate also helps with satisfying the urge to go black for seconds. Two small plate portions are equal to one big plate portion.

4. Drink plenty of water

It's important to stay hydrated, especially when you're eating more than usual. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

5. Get some exercise

Getting some exercise is a great way to offset the extra calories you're likely to consume on Shavous. Go for a walk, jump on the trampoline, or run around with the kids during the long yom tov afternoons.

6. Be kind to yourself. As you try to eat in a balanced way this chag, keep in mind it's okay to enjoy some delicious shavuos desserts. You do not eat like this all the time. It is a special holiday and you deserve to enjoy it!

By following these tips, you can still eat healthy on Shavous and enjoy all the delicious food the holiday has to offer.
